World Bank Once Again Gets it Wrong

For years people like Dr. Jeffrey Sachs have urged for rich nations to increase their level of aid to impovershed nations and to specifically increase subsides to fertilizer which increases crop yields. The IMF and the World Bank, which have been widely criticized for focuses too much on market-based solutions and fiscal belt tightening, clearly got it wrong in Malawi.
As this well-written article from the NY Times points out, Malawi’s fertilizer program is a model for what is possible. It is also a cautionary tale for policy-makers, who sometimes get it wrong.
