The Debate Debate
update: McCain is in! Get your popcorn ready.
John McCain has yet to commit to debating this evening. Instead, he may remain in Washington to help iron out the Wall Street bailout deal. However, during the White House meeting, McCain barely spoke. Congressional aides say that McCain has played a bystander role (even McCain famously once told reporters that he is not an expert in the economy). So if McCain isn’t really doing much in Washington, why not leave to share your vision with the country you wish to lead?
Obama, speaking of the debate, told reporters, “the most important thing that John McCain and I can do,” adding, “One of us is going to be in charge of this mess in 4 months and the American people, I think, not only have a right but have an obligation to find out where we want to take the country.”
Note to McCain supporters, Obama is right. Get your candidate down to Mississippi and lets have an important debate on the issues. The country needs to hear from our two candidates and now is the perfect time to do so.

The worst thing that John McCain and Barack Obama can do is to be muddying the waters with their presence at the bail out meetings. With their presence, they will be adding more pressure for the parties to split on party lines. They will be adding the campaigning divisions as a factor in the discussions.
It doesn’t appear that McCain is adding anything substantial to the discussion in any case. Did he just want to give the appearance of being the white knight charging to the rescue ? Is this just another example of image ahead of substance ? This brings back the vision of George W. Bush decked out in a Navy pilot’s uniform in front of the banner ‘Mission Accomplished’.

Well, thank God, Senator John McCain, Senator Shelby, and hundreds of economists don’t just want to take a few people’s word for it. Already, Reid has tried to tack additional pork, like Acorn, to this bailout. I didn’t think I could dislike inept Harry Reid, with his 15% approval rating, any more than I already did, but this isn’t about Reid being left alone to decide America’s future. It will be interesting to look back at this in retrospect, to see if we really did have to RUSH this 750 Billion dollar decision … and, who really benefitted from pushing it through so quickly. ALSO … WHAT’S ALAN GRENSPAN’S OPINION ON THE BAILOUT???
