Journalism can be a risky undertaking, especially when covering conflict zones.

The Free Media Movement, a journalist watchdog group, announced that Sri Lankan police have arrested 5 journalists - mostly from the Tamil ethnic minorty. The journalists work for outreachsl.com, a liberal website that has been critical of Sri Lanka’s government. The Free Media Movement claims that the journalists were taken into custody for questioning and “held incommunicado for hours” in Sri Lanka.

The arrests come the day before elections are to be held in the eastern region of the country, which was until July of 2007 under the control of separatist rebels.

Since August 11 journalists have been killed in Sri Lanka and many of the deaths remain a mystery. International media rights agencies classify Sri Lanka as one of the most dangerous countries for media workers after Iraq.
