Speaking on Darfur
Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, the eminent Professor and advocate for solving the problems of impoverished nations, was very critical on UN peacekeepers in Darfur.
“You could put the peacekeepers in there, they won’t change one iota on the ground in terms of the grim realities of the harshness of life in Darfur,” Sachs said, pointing to the need for clinics, schools, electricity and water holes. “I’m not against the peacekeepers, I just find them a waste of money,” he said. “Unless the rich world is going to promise $2.6 billion for the peacekeepers each year, plus $2.6 billion for development, I’d say keep your peacekeepers.”
The LA Times has a review on a powerful new documentary, “Sand and Sorrow” set to air on the suffering in Darfur.
While most of the mainstream media has ignored much of the suffering taking place there, literally thousands of blogs are dedicated to this topic. Once iConflict.com launches in early 2008, covering and discussing events in the region on a regular and consistent basis will be part of our mission.
Darfur: an Unforgivable Hell on Earth, is a blog filled with tremendous background information and updates on the crisis.

im glad to see some really care about these kinds of issues and keep it out there. The UN website has some good information on Darfur as well.
Comment made on December 5th, 2007 at 6:31 pmWhat did Jeff have to do with Sudan when at the World Bank. A few more millions then might have hedged a few billion…what will it take for western emininces like sachs to realize the level of need and integration of resources and trade necessary to turn the corner in Africa for good. He is afraid to admit, economists like himself find it cheaper for millions to die…instead.
We have learned that for the most part we are all descendents of mankind’s birth in AFRICA….who treats their home with such disrespect and ignonimy?
