Sound Off on VP Debate
52 million Americans are expected to watch the VP debate on Thursday. 52 million!
Everyone has an opinion as to how the VP debate will go. Some expect Sarah Palin to tank, the same way she did in the Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric interview. Some think after careful planning and a few days in ‘debate camp,’ that she will be ready and prepared for a strong performance. Others think the bar is set so low, just by showing up she will win.
Perhaps no other VP debate in US history has been so hyped. Much of the attention has focused on Palin, but it is Biden who may do more to determine the outcome. He must select his tactics carefully or anything he says against Palin could backfire. Remember all the talk of Al Gore being a master debater and George W. Bush being a lousy one? Bush won the 2000 debates hands down. Cheney cleaned Joe Lieberman’s clock in 2000 and then did the same to John Edwards in 2004. Debates can be tricky to navigate. The biggest mistake democrats can make is to assume Palin will falture. It is true she might, but more likely she will come prepared. As much as this is Palin’s moment, it is also Biden’s moment. Contrary to popular opinion, I think the winner of the debate is more likely to be shaped by what Biden says rather than what Palin says.
The San Fransisco Chronicle writes, “With built-in nail-biting drama - Will “Sarah Barracuda” show up? Will Joe Biden button it? - Thursday night’s vice presidential debate could turn out to be this season’s most compelling reality show.”
The Houston Chronicle summed it up this way: Thursday’s vice-presidential debate has the potential to be a smack-down or a train wreck. Either way, it could be great TV.”
I’m not a Cowboy’s fan, but I think Terrell Owens would say it best, ‘get your popcorn ready.’ It’s going to be one interesting evening.

I think its pathetic that the Republicans have set the bar so pathetically low for their VP nominee. You would think she was running for VP of the White House flower garden staff by the way they are defending her absolute lack of knowledge of the political process, supreme court, foreign policy and economic policy. Lets not forget her stunning ignorance of the voting tendencies and political history of the man who chose her. If I hadn’t seen the two of them together at the convention I would have thought they’d never met one and other.
Maybe I’m just too influenced by the liberal media? Then again when Republicans refer to the “media elite” its a subtle jab at those Americans who have made it beyond the 10th grade and own newspaper subscriptions.
If it weren’t for the embarassingly high drop out rate this election would be a democratic landslide.
Comment made on October 1st, 2008 at 10:39 pmThank the stars the O’Bama/Biden team will win the White house, just the thought of the American People having to ask a Foriegn Leader/Spokesperson to take it easy on palin because of her gender/sex is distrubing especially when one includes the current Finanacial and Economic Problems We as a Nation Currently face because of the CORRUPT & CROOKED Officials both appointed and elected on the Local to Federal levels of governments.
In “OUR” time of need “We THE PEOPLE” need Leaders not nit-picking wimps and more CROOKS more interested in self-promotion and self-image than serving the “AMERICAN TAX PAYERS & SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS”!
Comment made on October 1st, 2008 at 11:00 pmHas anyone seen clips from her debates and TV spots in Alaska as recent as just 2 years ago? She’s being too tightly reigned in. If they will let her be herself — say what comes to her mind and not worry about this little “mold” of what they think she needs to say (and NOT say), then she’ll be fantastic. That’s supposedly why he chose her — then let her shine!
Comment made on October 2nd, 2008 at 7:38 amThe bar is set so low that Palin wins just for showing up. Palin will not answer the questions, she will just rattle off strings of attack sound bites, and the fundamentalists and extreme right will declare her the winner. That is what will be all over the airwaves and blogosphere on Friday.
Comment made on October 2nd, 2008 at 7:50 amI tend to agree with JD in Houston. Plus the Republicans are already crying foul over the moderator. As long as she can match her verbs with her nouns everyone will say she did well.
I only hope they have prepped Joe Biden. He can be a good speaker, but that has not always been the case. A little humor does go a long way in these debates though.
Comment made on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:34 amI believe that Sarah Palin will win the debate. How you may ask? Because she will have a transmitter in her ear and will be fed answers by people who actually can quote a supreme court decision and will know the answers to questions posed to her. I believe it is in the best interest of everyone that this be checked out before the debate, because if she actually answers a question intelligently this will be the only explanation
Comment made on October 2nd, 2008 at 12:40 pmPalin will be a star tonight. Biden will do okay. But only if he stays focused on highlighting Obama and showing that McCain is the riskier candidate.
Risky–endorses the Bush policies (no change)
Risky–oldest candidate ever with an inexper. VP
Risky–wants to drill for oil offshore, drill, drill, drill
Risky–doesn’t have a good health plan
Risky–shoots from the hip on foreign policy
Risky–lacks consistancy
Risky–contradicts himself repeatedly
Risky–claims he is a truth teller, but lies again and again
This election will affect the younger generations as much as the retirees. Obama has a better understanding of the younger generation’s needs - technology, work force, etc.
Comment made on October 2nd, 2008 at 1:16 pmSo it’s “nail biting television”, complete with instructions to “get your popcorn ready” to watch this seasons’ “most compelling reality show”? Okay, I get it. All Sarah Barracuda has to do is show up, wear the right lipstick, repeat some of her slick and cynical ’shock and awe’ GOP convention lines (never mind that they border on L-I-E-S), not pass out or throw up and she wins? Oh, and be sure to have the pregnant daughter holding Sarah’s newborn baby come up onto the stage so she can demonstrate again that she’s sympatico with the “Joe 6-Packs” of the world. That should seal the deal. Yikes!!!
Comment made on October 2nd, 2008 at 1:56 pmI keep hearing about how Joe Biden needs to walk on eggshells and treat Sarah Palin like porcelain. WHAT? Did Joe walk on eggshells and treat Hillary like porcelain? Maybe the real difference here is that Hillary has balls, and Sarah Palin has…lipstick.
Comment made on October 2nd, 2008 at 2:05 pmNow that they have decided to proceed with off shore drilling I hope Biden brings home the point that this oil will not even be available for at least ten years, will only account for 1% of the total oil in this country and will lower gas prices, MAYBE 4 cents a gallon. You know Sarah Palin will be running her mouth about drilling in ANWR and her fictional pipeline.
Comment made on October 2nd, 2008 at 2:17 pmim worried about tonight. i kinda think palin’s gonna win by default. (that says a lot about our country too)
Comment made on October 2nd, 2008 at 7:53 pmIt appears Saturday Night Live has plenty of fodder for this weekend and many others. Does Palin know anything? I want Biden for President!
Comment made on October 3rd, 2008 at 12:42 amYea for Sarah, went toe to toe with Biden, all that “experience ” and he didn’t show it. Sarah has more experience than the top of the Democratic ticket but no one talks about that! Can you see “Joe” seriously as the President, give me a break the mans a buffoon at best. Its about time we get leadership for a change, life experience and vision to match. No doubt Sarah pulled this off and who the he– are they polling to think “Joe” won anyway…
