Saddam was Surprised U.S. Invaded
60 Minutes aired a fascinating look at Saddam Hussein, who wanted the world to believe he had weapons of mass destruction in order to intimidate Iran, a country he feared would attack him, rather than the US.
The FBI agent sent to interrogate Hussein, George Piro, went to greath lengths to make Hussein feel Piro reported directly to President Bush. In fact, he did not. After building a relationship he was able to unearth a great deal of information from the fallen dictator.
“He told me he initially miscalculated … President Bush’s intentions. He thought the United States would retaliate with the same type of attack as we did in 1998 … a four-day aerial attack,” Piro said. “He survived that one and he was willing to accept that type of attack.”

“He didn’t believe the U.S. would invade?” Correspondent Scott Pelley asked.
“No, not initially,” Piro answered.
