The last time Cuba had a new leader, Dwight Eisenhower was President, Barack Obama wasn’t even born yet, and the US had just committed its first soilders into a remote place in South East Asia called Vietnam.

But today, Cuba’s National Assembly will gather to select its next leader. There isn’t much suspense about the outcome. Fidel’s brother, Raul, will be elected President of Cuba. There is suspense about what happens next for the nation. Some have speculated that Raul will begin to issue long needed economic reforms. Then, there is the embargo with the United States, a Cold War era policy that remains in place. Will Raul open up Cuba or will he be more of the same like his ailing brother?
