Power Out in Gaza Puts Israel Under Pressure
Gaza City is dark. In retaliation for rocket attacks, Israel has blocked fuel shipments into the region. The Israelis assert the move is designed to target hamas and insist they will not allow this to turn into a humanitarian crisis.Â
The blackout “is a Hamas ploy to pretend there is some kind of crisis to attract international sympathy,” said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Arye Meckel.
Pressure is being put on Israel to ease its blockade in the Gaza Strip in the Hamas-controlled territory. A U.N. agency said on Monday it would have to suspend food distribution to 860,000 Palestinians if the blockage was not lifted.
Other international groups warned that unless the border was opened, Gaza hospitals would run out of drugs and generator fuel in a few days. Â
The EU, which ships fuel to Gaza City supported Israel’s right to defend itself but called the action a “collective punishment” and urged them to lift the blockade.
