The two rival parties that won last months election in Pakistan have formed a new coalition government. What they have yet to determine is the fate of Pervez Musharraf.
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari, the husband of the slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, held a photo-op for reporters as a show of unity. They also pledged to return democracy to Pakistan and are looking to restore the judges that were removed from office by Musharraf. The longtime rivals seemed content together in their new role as allies.Â
“Please give us a chance. We are bound together in the spirit of democracy,” Zardari said. “Pakistanis have spoken and they have spoken the language of democracy. They are asking for a chance to come up to the standards of the civilized world.”
They also called on Musharraf to convene parliament for its new session. He has pledged to do that within the next two weeks.
