After Eric Holder was announced as President-Elect Obama’s selection for Attorney General, many wondered about what the future held for the very popular Governor of Arizona, Janet Napolitano. CNN is now reporting that Napolitano is about to be offered the role of Secretary of Homeland Security.

Some had suggested she was interested in running against John McCain in 2010 for the Senate. Napolitano is term limited in the Governorship.

Today the Arizona Capital Times reported, “Napolitano was equally tightlipped about rumors that she is considering a run for John McCain’s U.S. Senate seat in 2010, which would be the last year of her tenure as governor. McCain, 72, just two weeks removed from his loss to Obama in the presidential election, announced earlier in the week that he plans to seek re-election in 2010.”

Tom Daschle is also expected to get the nod for Health and Human Services, while Chicago businesswoman Penny Pritzker is Obama’s choice for commerce secretary.

Oh Great!

As a Arizonan, Governor Napolitano was sometimes the lone sane voice in Arizona Politics. I believe the next in line for succession is the Secretary of State who is a Republican. As they (the republicans) hold a majority in the State Congress, we will now be subject again to weird, perverse and extraordinary bad laws. Remember the “boner law” (look it up). We have an awful tendency to lock up everybody except jaywalkers. People are serving year (or longer)prison terms for DUI’s and because of mandatory sentencing guidelines, must serve out over 2/3 of the time making the our prison system one of the most overcrowded in the nation!!
I am happy for the Governor, but, at the same time, I fell abandoned and a bit fearful of what we will now be subjected to.

There are Republicans who care about issues, such as, madatory sentencing laws that are filling our prisons to capacity without reason. I for one, know that there are “sane” voices within the Republican pary that desire to keep our state safe, secure and within common sense parameters.

There are problems within each party, but I hope that people would begin to embrace the belief that there are those who care deeply about social issues that are Republicans too. Just as Democrats can pray and attend church, they don’t all have horns and spew liberal garbage. We need balance and not far left or far right ideas and laws.

Let the citizens of Arizona stand for common sense and practicality in all things, and make our state stand for “People, Not Politics.”

if her decades of failing to secure the Mexico-AZ border are any indication, then she should do a real bang-up job securing the whole country
