Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said flatly that the opposition parties in the upcoming February 18th election must accept the outcome results and not to resort to any agitation should the election not go their way. He also asserted the elections will be free and fair.

“They should not be under any illusion that they will bring people to the streets after the election. Nothing of that sort will be allowed,” Musharraf said in comments at a seminar telecast on Thursday by state-run Pakistan Television. “In this situation of extremism and terrorism, no agitation, anarchy or chaos can be acceptable.”

Meanwhile a new survey out finds that Mursharraf’s popularity has tumbled over instability in Pakistan and now must of his countrymen view him as an ‘obstacle’ to stability.

Since elections are a relatively new concept for Musharraf (he came to power in a 1999 coup), now might be a good time for him to change his campaign message, or he might found out that in politics you can go from hero to zero in an instant - just ask Rudy Giuliani. Let’s hope that if the election goes against Musharraf that he heeds his own words.
