John McCain will be the Republican candidate for President.

Tonight he secured the necessary delegates to win the nomination.  After he delivered his victory speech tonight, McCain will travel to DC where he will be formally endorsed by President Bush.

“I have never believed I was destined be president,” McCain told supporters. “I don’t believe anyone is pre-destined to lead America. But I do believe we are born with responsibilities to the country that has protected our God-given rights, and the opportunities they afford us.”

Mike Huckabee dropped out of the race tonight, after a hard-fought effort that saw him rise from relative obscurity to wide acclaim.  Huckabee’s campaign zenith came in Iowa when he came out of nowhere to win the January caucus.  As other candidates left the race, Huckabee remained in it and continued to campaign to loyal followers.  While his campaign is now done, Huckabee’s heightened profile should keep him active within GOP politics.
