Louis Vuitton Sues Darfur Fundraiser

On iConflict this week a user submitting an interesting story about fashion house Louis Vuitton suing an artist for selling posters and t-shirts of a Darfur victim, holding a designer bag inspired by a Louis Vuitton design. It’s an interesting debate.
On the one hand, Louis Vuitton is clearly being depicted in a negative light in this image and as a corporation they have a responsibility to maintain their image. On the other hand, all of the profits had been going to charity - the artist, Nadia Plesner, has not earned a penny from her work. Does Louis Vuitton expect money that has gone to charities who help Darfur victims instead send the money back to Louis Vuitton? There should have been a middle way, some other action to avoid a lawsuit and the obvious negative PR that would come from it.
Or, Louis Vuitton, a company that had ties to the Nazi party, could have found a way to embrace the ad and admit that yes we as a society do pay more attention to somethings (our bags) and less attention to other things (the suffering of mankind). Maybe that, ironically, would have helped them sell more bags…
