Kenyan Police “Shoot to Kill”
The crisis in Kenya may slowly be falling from the headlines (after all how long can the establishment media really cover violence in Africa, you knew eventually they would drop it), but the bloodshed continues.
International human rights campaigners, including Human Rights Watch, claim that the Kenyan police have a “shoot to kill” policy to quell any protests or commotion from the fallout of the disputed presidential election. To date, at least 575 people have been confirmed dead.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s embattled President Mwai Kibaki is expected to face a political showdown with members of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as he officially convenes parliament on Tuesday. Although there were signs that the nation was returning to normal - schools were open for the first time since the violence started, and the markets of Nairobi were crowded. Yet, some fear this is the calm before the next storm to hit this embattled country.Â
