It now goes to the Parliament of Kenya to finalize the peace process.

Today, the first session of paliament opened since the power-sharing agreement was reached between President Mwai Kibaki and former rival turned new Prime Minister Ralia Odinga.

“I urge honorable members to ensure that all the necessary bills to implement the accord and other social and economic reforms are dealt with promptly so that Kenya can be fully restored to, and even exceed, its former glory,” Kibaki said.

“The accord is a victory for all Kenyans, laying the foundation for peace and stability in our country. The successful implementation of the accord will require goodwill, unity, good faith and integrity from this house and all our country’s leader,” he added.

Almost two full months of violence left around 1,500 dead, following the contested election results which many believed was rigged.

Should parliament pass the peace accord into law, Kenya’s reorganized government - now with a President and Prime Minister, have vowed to work together to heal the nation.
