The police in Kenya have been called upon for almost a month to try and restrain the violence that has rattled the country. However, now reports are emerging that the police are simply outnumbered, outmatched and unprepared to deal with this unprecedented level of bloodshed.

David Ohito, a senior political reporter for the Kenyan Standard newspaper told VOA English to Africa that the police are overstretched and the government is reluctant to bring in the army to restore order because of makeup of the army.

“The only alternative available to the government is to use the military, but the military has its own internal problems. The composition of the Kenyan military is overpopulated with members of a community that support ODM (Orange Democratic Movement), other than those who support the party (PNU) in government. So they (the government) fear that if they call in the army, the army might side with the people.”

CNN filed this insightful report from Kenya earlier today:

We are weak, so weak. The most powerful country on earth can do nothing, because we want to do nothing. Where is President Carter, Clinton, former allies of Africa, to help Kofi, one man, head of the honorable but humble UN.

This is my Kenya too, 3 years spent teaching, working, struggling to live amongst Lou, Kisii, Luhya, Kikuyu, Pokot, Tugen my students all of you must know better than this. Politicians, colonial and neo-colonialists laugh at you to see it happening again, like Rwand, your smaller but piteous cousin.

There should be no River Between you, you must flow as one to have honor and success. The gangs too cowardly to fight their form colonial masters, so they look for young wildebeasts, antelopes….forced to flee their homes.

Raila And Mwai, two old men afraid to come into the street to work at bringing hope and prosperity, because Pounds and cheap gains are easier.

Mwai’s whole political career now worth not one page of the Daily Nation. And Raila, a shadow of his father and like other 2nds ready to twist for Moi, Mwai, whomever offers better.

Without the guts of a real Luo who will you walk with in any government, street thugs who’d take your own house and burn it?

Baraka is now a dream, you will have to begin all anew, so many years of struggle and advancement lost, and for what?

A kenyan 1st you will all have to be. Check your pride, your ethnic souls can show in so many ways, but lifting the panga on women, children, fearful men…..you are all cowards. The real fight is to stand and make your way through community and education. so you know better when some eunuch thug whispers in your ears.
