Kenya Crisis: ‘Genocide on a Grand Scale’
Raila Odinga called off a massive rally this morning in the wake of tear gas and water cannons being fired at the crowd. While most walked away from the aborted rally unharmed, the same cannot be said for many across Kenya.Â
At a Nairobi morgue on Thursday, Odinga toured freezing rooms of the dead and saw the bodies of babies and children piled on shelves, according to an Associated Press report. It was unclear when those in the morgue died, but Odinga supporters said some died on Thursday.
“What we have just seen defies description,” Odinga told journalists after visiting the morgue. “We can only describe it as genocide on a grand scale.”
Kenya’s attorney general today called for an independent group to verify the results of a recent presidential election, as protests over the outcome continued to roil the country.
About 300 have died in the tribal violence that exploded after President Mwai Kibaki was sworn into office after disputed elections.Â
