International Pressure Mounts on China Over Tibet

International pressure is now mounting against China in response to its crackdown of protests in Tibet. The rippple effect of the violence in is being felt in new ways, including in the upcoming eleection in Taiwan.
The NY Times is reporting, “The suppression of Tibet protests by Chinese security forces, as well as missteps by the Nationalist Party, which Beijing favors, have nearly erased what had seemed like an insuperable lead for Ma Ying-jeou, the Harvard-educated lawyer who has been the front-runner in the race. Concern that China’s crackdown could herald a tougher line on outlying regions that Beijing claims as sovereign territory, including Taiwan, has become the most contested campaign issue ahead of Saturday’s election.”
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday met with the Dalai Lama and criticized China for its crackdown on anti-government protesters.
“If freedom-loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China’s oppression in China and Tibet, we have lost all moral authority to speak on behalf of human rights anywhere in the world,” Pelosi said. “The situation in Tibet is a challenge to the conscience of the world.”
Several users of Blogflict this week have suggested that the US boycott the 2008 summer Olympic Games in protest of China’s actions in Tibet.

Some people are being selectively-blind. I don’t believe Ms. Pelosi hasn’t looked at the riot videos in Tibet, and I can’t think of any other governments not cracking down this kind of riots and allow them to develop. In fact, the Chinese government has used all restraints it had and actually allowed the ethnic Han and Muslim to suffer and let the steam out from the ethnic Tibetan before they acted to stabilize the situation. If you don’t believe it, looked at reports elsewhere that witnessed the violence of the Tibetan.
Ms. Pelosi’s view is clear: China should give up Tibet as a part of its territory, no matter what it does. AND it’s ironic that she even shamelessly said “moral authority on human rights”, while the human rights in Iraq have suffered so and no one heard anything from this “moral authority”. What a shame!
Dalai Lama had very good relationship with Nazi and he is also a good friend of Japanese terrorist.
The Dalai Lama wants to be dictator of Tibet. What’s more, the religion he is peaching is to make most of the Tibetan people enjoying being slaves. Before 1950, the Tibet was a slave society, and the Dalai Lama was the the master of the slaves. Chinese central government liberated them, but still restrored the Dalai’s religion status. At that time, he was only a 16 years old boy. Chairman mao invited him to Beijing, treating him as the Leader of Tibet. But he was not satisfied, and fled to India several years later. He tried to split Tibet from China. Many riots in Tibet since then are related to him, which led thousands of innocent people to death.

well, same things happened in New Orlean, south of Paris or south Korea. most of people has video cell phone or video cam nowaday show me one single video clip of chinese police open fire to the not so peaceful protesters. All I saw was the police taking sheilds from the rocks and fire bombs.Give me a break for those 99 deads they claims ….. bunch of liars.

I am from China and I have been in the USA for nearly a year. Now I really understand how “free” your media is and how you americans are brainwashed! What you did does not really hurt China at all, but just lost the trust of the Chinese.

On the outside chance you are telling the truth then note the freedom we have that you are denied in the PRC. We can criticize our government and not go to jail or be beaten. We can make peaceful changes to our government via elections. We even let PRC shills post in the west. Try criticizing Wen Jiabao or the Central Committee and you will land in jail or worse but then you know that. You need to worry about American trusting your flawed and inferior products. Get the Central committee to fix Chinese product quality and stop wasting money on blogs.

China has over 10,000 internet polices that are spreading rumors like this. I don’t believe the video that PRC put out. How do you know that the claimed demostrator which started the fight is not actually the spy for PRC government? Chinese has used this kind of tactic before where they put spies in the demonstrators to start the fight, making it look bad on the demonstrator. Plus, China won’t allow any media, except their own, to shot the video. If there is really nothing to hide, why they won’t allow other world-media to report on the scene?
China is really like the NAZI right before the WWII, brain-washing its own people while building up its military and economic power. The history of China is never about peace, it’s about wars and assimilations of other countries and cultures.

If Dalai Lama truly abides the so-called non-violence doctrine and has the claimed influence, then, the recent riot should have not happened. He has either lost his influence (could not prevent those killing of innocent civilians from happening) or simply become a terrorist (if he was indeed behind those riots and killings). Either way, he can not be trusted on this matter. It was appalling that Nancy Pelosi failed to see that. Given the low congress approval ratings, I really doubt that she is fit to be the House of Representatives Speaker.

Good afternoon. Im a lawyer in vacation in a remote town in Central Visayas Philippines.I read what Ms. Pelosi was saying against China om the Tibet issue. When I was young then in the 1950’s, or in the 1980’s I believe right away what the U. S. says against China. Now its diffirent. I realized, I was hoodwink by some Western media. I read the Chinese and the Western version of the issue regarding Tibet. I say China was correct. Besides,how could I believe the Western version when with the help of some international cable networks,they lied to the world about Iraq,and destroyed it. I pity so many Americans who until now, are so gullible about their political leaders-leaders who are elected “democratically”, but only if you spend millions of dollars.

I am telling you that I am live in Canada and not a chinese shill as you refer to. I don’t like some of the chinese policies as well, but nobody is perfect. Just the world it is. All I want to say is before we make any name calling, please look a little bit deeper than what the medias try to sell you. I learned that when I was in china and read all the gov controled medias try to tell me.
I don’t think police chinese or not, try to protect the innocents and try to neting those response for this riot should be blamed for.Riots like that happened in south of Paris, New Orlean and south Korea, Kosovo and all the G7 summit meetings. I didn’t recall Pelosi was there waving the flags.
About the Tibet is more complicate than it seems. If you believe freedom like I do then why should you agree that Dalai Lama ’s intention to “preseve Tibet as a pure buddish state”? I think everyone should have their chioce between religious or chose not to.
Flawed and inferior products from china is another example the medias here try to sell you. compare the massive import products from china, it is very low percentage that has flawed and inferior issue. And some of them is under American brand name’supervised.

Those rioting Tibetans are thugs. Plain and simple. They may be instigated and/or paid off by the separatist movement, they’re still just thugs. How could we turn a blind eye and deaf ear to all the looting and rioting which LED TO the increase in government security presence? Can we imagine our government tolerating this kind of unrest in LA? The media is flooded with sensational words like “crackdown”, “bloodshed”? I don’t remember anything similar when US responded to the LA riot.

The nepal police has hit the tibetan protestor in Nepal, but they said it’s in Tibet. What’s the purpose of this kind of freedom news?
Let me ask you several questions: 1. have you been to Tibet or China 2. do you know Chinese communist party’s policy toward minority ethnic? 3. Do you know the whole history of Tibet instead of just 60 years?
If you don’t know, you should study more.
China is on the way on the development. And the people who are able to talk are full of freedom to get the free information, unlike 20 years ago. Please don’t use the old color glass to look at the Chinese people again. We have own thinking, own mind which is not eay to be brainstormed by the government. We have been to US, UK, Canada,Japan,Singapore, Malaysia, India and almost all of the western countries, we are able to talk and read and watch TV in English, but you can not talk in Chinese, you may not have experience on oriental culture. Therefore actually we knew better the world than you. So your information about the China or Tibet is actually brainstormed by your media and your country, you didn’t have the opposite side opinions. Therefore you are not free to get information in these kinds of issue.
We believe Chinese government on this issue based on both side of information and on the experience of hwo Chinese government behaves on this kind of issue.
Time will tell you the truth. The western media this time really did something wrong.
