Georgia’s President Narrowly Wins Vote

by: Jason Haber Sunday, January 6th, 2008

Georgia’s incumbent President, Mikheil Saakashvili, has been declared the winner in Georgia’s election.  Although international observers say the election was fair, the opposition party is claiming the vote was rigged.

In a statement that sounded eerily similar to what the opposition party said in Kenya’s disputed election results,  “Saakashvili lost and it cannot happen that Georgia will not defend its freedom, that we won’t win,” Levan Gachechiladze, a main rival to Saakashvili, told 6,000 of his supporters at a protest rally in the capital, Tbilisi.

According to estimates,  Saakashvili claimed 52.8 percent of the vote, while opposition leader Levan Gachechiladze had 27 percent
