Fidel Castro, the leader of Cuba for the last 50 years, has resigned from office. In recent years Castro has been out of the public eye, battling an illness. The last 10 US Presidents have had to contend with him during and after the Cold War.

“I will not aspire to neither will I accept — I repeat I will not aspire to neither will I accept — the position of President of the Council of State and Commander in chief...It would betray my conscience to occupy a responsibility that requires mobility and the total commitment that I am not in the physical condition to offer.”

President Bush, traveling in Rwanda said in a statement, “United States will help the people of Cuba realize the blessings of liberty,” he said.

It is well-known that Fidel’s brother, Raul Castro, is next in line as the head of Cuba. The National Assembly is set to meet on Sunday and that is viewed as the moment he takes full power.
