Indonesia’s former president Suharto, whose legacy of economic development was marred by corruption and human rights abuses during his 32 years in power, died today at age 86, after suffering multiple organ failure.

Suharto, who, like other Indonesians, only has one name, was president of Indonesia from 1967 until he was forced to resign — amid immense political pressure and mass street protests — in 1998. Poor health kept him from court after he left office.

As a leader was vilified as one of the world’s most brutal rulers and was accused of overseeing a reign of corruption and, later, economic decline.  It is this legacy, and not the emmergence of his country as a growing economy, that will be remembered most.
