EU leaders to sign treaty to reform bloc

by: Jason Haber Thursday, December 13th, 2007

The European Union nations will sign an important treaty today, known as the “Lisbon Treaty,” (because it was signed in Lisbon and because Portugal wanted that fact to be remembered), which will help to modernize the institutions of the  Union.  Interestingly, Gordon Brown of England, will not be on hand for the pomp of the ceremony, a sign, seen by some, that he is not engaged in affairs of the EU.

Leaders are also being criticized by environmentalists for flying to Lisbon to sign this document and then heading to Belgium for the annual December meeting of the EU.   It does seem like a waste of emissions.  But then again, since EU leaders were rebuffed by the US on emissions caps at the Bali Conference, who are we to be critical of them.

Everything you would need to know about the treaty can be found here.  We don’t think Gordon Brown or George Bush will be clicking on that link, but you can.

Gordon Brown could care less about the EU. Their growing power is of concern to the UK, who never really fit into this united Europe thing.

Why won’t George Bush click thru? Right, because he is reading comics and thinks the EU is a hockey league.
