Earth Hour Arrives as Cities Go Dark
Posted on March 29, 2008 - Filed Under climate crisis |
Earth hour, a program in its second year that asks cities to turn off their lights to make a statement about climate change, is currently underway around the world. Hopefully, this initiative will help to raise awareness on climate change, since clearly scientific fact doesn’t seem to be working. Too many governments and skeptics remain unconvinced that climate change is real.
At iConflict.com users can upload videos and images they record of their cities going dark.
CNN is reporting, “From Rome’s Colosseum to the Sydney Opera House, floodlit icons of civilization went dark Saturday for Earth Hour, a worldwide campaign to highlight the waste of electricity and the threat of climate change. Irish observation of Earth Hour got a day’s head start because civil servants were told to turn off their office lights and shut down computers, not to leave them on standby mode, when they left work Friday night.”
From the Earth Hour website:
“On March 29, 2008 at 8 p.m., join millions of people around the world in making a statement about climate change by turning off your lights for Earth Hour, an event created by the World Wildlife Fund.
Earth Hour was created by WWF in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and in one year has grown from an event in one city to a global movement. In 2008, millions of people, businesses, governments and civic organizations in nearly 200 cities around the globe will turn out for Earth Hour. More than 100 cities across North America will participate, including the US flagships–Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco and Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. View cities involved around the world.”

I was reluctant to do this at first, but my daughter and her friend persuaded me. Now I think we should do this every week and maybe every night. After the silence of an hour, to turn back on all the noise was somewhat annoying!
