China Accuses Dalai Lama of Taking Olympics “Hostage”
Posted on March 23, 2008 - Filed Under China, Tibet |
Fearful of an international backlash to its country and possibly to the upcoming Olympic Games, China wants the world to know what is really happening in Tibet…The question is, do you believe their side of the story?
The Chinese government is pointing the finger at the Dalai Lama for plotting “terror” in the region. They are also accusing him of working with Uighur separatists in Xinjiang. China also attacked its critics of the recent crackdown on Tibetan protesters, calling U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as “habitually bad tempered” while claiming the Western media want to hurt the communist country.
The People’s Daily, a leading Communist newspaper in China pronounced today, “The Beijing Olympics are eagerly awaited by the people of the whole world, but the Dalai clique is scheming to take the Beijing Olympics hostage to force the Chinese government to make concessions to Tibet independence.”
Another quote of interest, this one coming from an official Shanghai news site (eastday.com), “The Dalai clique has descended into becoming an outright terrorist organization.”
According to CNN, “The government has also disseminated footage of Tibetan protesters attacking Chinese and accusations of biased reporting by Western media via TV, the Internet, e-mail and YouTube, which is blocked in China. The media barrage underscored that the government campaign is moving into a new phase of damage control ahead of the much-anticipated Beijing Olympics in August”

The Spiegel in German misled the audiances by saying the nepal police as Chinese police crackdown the tibetans. I wonder whether they have already found the mistake. Press freedom should be responsible and accurate, but obviously they didn’t and have no intention to appologize and correct the mistake. CNN has the same problems too. You are always regarding yourselves as freedom and justify. But why are you unable to deal with this issue by telling lies?
I was so disappointed with the west media which have been thinking as freedom and democratic that our country need to change to. But now your action have hurt lots of Chinese like me. They and I will not trust your media any more like when we don’t rely singly on our country’s media too.
If you do a survey, you will know all of my saying is true. You have lost the trust from many many Chinese.
I think the Tibet Monks robbed the shops is very unlikely. The truth probably was that CCP asked police or others to disguise as Tibet Monks to do the jobs. In fact, there were reports on this issue by major media just choose to ignored the facts. The tactics were use in 1989’s tiananmen square crackdown. Clintons set a very bad example in 1995 to visit China and later on give CCP PNTR. The pullution of CCP’s corruption on western politicians. Media started on clintons and penetrating into the every aspect on the society. I hope with more and more Chinese people waking up and abadoning CCP, the western society realize that.
Jimmy,
From your talk, I could see that you don’t know China and Chinese government. We got the information from both western side and Chinese side. Our judgement is that the Chinese government is correct. And also we found the western media is using the colorful glass to give the report because the media like you doesn’t trust even 1% of Chinese government. Because the Chinese government is described always such a monster in Western country that everything the CCP does must be wrong. With this mindset, It’s easily to believe that Western media is always correct and Chinese Media is always wrong.
For us, we have the experience living in western country and in China, we have understood both culture and also we have been watched the western media broadcasting for 9.11, Iraq war, Cosov War and the news about China and so. on. We know what’s drawback of Chinese government and the western goverment and also we know what’s the advantage of both government and medias. But I have learned more about western media. That’s to gain the aim they want, they could use more selective reports and even in lie.
Like what you said that Chinese government hired someone to do such kind of brutal issues will be impossible on the Chinese government.
You may hardly understand the following issue that the chinese government has ordered to the police “don’t react at any condition even the protestor hurts you”. But we know this is the truth. You don’t understand it because you are westerner and you don’t understand some cultures of Chinese. We are Chinese, we know it.
Chinese government has lots of issues need to be improved. But it’s not as what you think about.
If you are really to discuss about China and Tibet, I’d like to one of your window. In such a way, you may know not only the news from Western Media, but also the opinion from the normal Chinese. With more communication, you will have your opinion other than those from your government and media.
(Please don’t think we are Chinese Spy which brings your fear) I’m working in a US company in Shanghai and 1 year stay in Canada as immigrant)

I am just so surprised that US media like CNN showed minimum sympathy or humanity to those innocent people burned and killed in the riot. Some of them were Tibetans. It was a riot, not a peaceful demonstration. I also found that ignorant ones like Jimmy who can really tell joke as his hypothesis with no basic knowledge and common sense. China wants peace, not riot and social disturbance.
There are tens of thousands foreign visitor to Tibet every year. Those who have been there should stand out bravely to tell the truth against the false propaganda of Western Media like CNN.
It was riot in Tibet. It was the same story like the South against North in US civil war. It was the same story about US Government against Texas Republic. It was the same story of US Government against those outlawed religion groups.
Western media is biased. Here is one recent CNN report:
Quote
Beijing has released tallies of statements of support from foreign governments — 100 of them, it said, from North Korea to Sudan and Tonga.
Unquote
While there are 100 foreign governments supporting China, why CNN only mention three countries that the West does not like? Ask CNN what would have the US government would do if the same riot, in which innocent people are beaten and burned alive, happened in the US?
Also ask what Tibet was like when Dalai Lama was the ruler of Tibet. Slavery was the social norm under Dalai. Dalai’s version of a Free Tibet is actually one that favors those former slaves owners.
CNN’s doing a good job of pointing out all the overly baised negatives. They fail to point out some of the police are actually aiding the bystanders in the chaos, while Tibetans carry on their ‘peaceful protest.’ Truth is America supports any nation that wants liberty, it’s happened through out history, and it’s happening again. They’re using overly biased propaganda to prove their point, creating alarming distrust in the Chinese community. And they wonder why every one hates America.
So funny, CNN has mistaken India troop as Chinese troop, so can not white people distinguish Chinese and Indian?
You guys can check the pics from CNN carefully
For those of you who are outraged by the inaccurate, biased, and even outright dishonest reporting by CNN and other mainstream western media about Tibet rioting, I realized something that is comforting to know. They will hurt themselves in the long run. Truth will come out, it has already come out for those of us who can read Chinese. 99.99% of population in China have realized that the CNN, etc. are not to be trusted in their reporting from this incidence. It is going to be very bad for their future business. China is a fast growing country economically, and Chinese will play a larger and larger role in the world. CNN will regret it.
China does have its flaws, some are big flaws. However, considering that US has 200 years of democracy and we still have the ugly side of civil rights movement during 60s. China has just opened for less than thirty years and has improved so much in these 30 years.
I do believe that our media is biased. If this is Palestinians got killed, it will be no big of deal. No human right’s violation but just a bunch of terrorists, not someone seeking for independence and preserver their culture.
On top of that, this time it is a riot, not peaceful demonstration. The rioters killed innocent people. Any responsible goverment will put a stop on that. As one CNN reporter who happens to be there said Chinese government bent backward this time by not securing the place quick enough, may be due to worrying about the Olympics. That late action caused lives. Chinese government should not be blamed for take action but late action!!! see the cnn link(http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/03/20/tibet.miles.interview/index.html#cnnSTCText) I just don’t know why CNN never put this piece on a prominent place.

Toronto Star is doing the same thing. I wonder if they have any brain at all.
I dont have any government background, just a normal Chinese. So maybe my comments can be seen as the reference for all western viewers representing what most of Chinese poeple think about this riot in Tibet.
Chine does have flaws, but for this incident, I can guarantee very few poeple back this riot. So everyone is aware that China is going to host Olympic games this year, and China’s economy has been getting robust over the past a few years. But some guys just really dont want to see those positive change happen in China, including Dalai Lama. As Dalai Lama is a spiritual and religious leader to Tibetan people, I respected him but just before. From now on, he won’t have my respect any more. From my point of view, he didn’t really think about the prosperity of Tibet and well being of Tibetan people, but put “his” followers in bad situation.
Trust me, I don’t care too much about the politics and what they say on state-run TV, the above comments represent the comments of most Chinese people who need the social stability and healthy economy.
