Bush to Saudi King: Throw us a Bone
Posted on January 15, 2008 - Filed Under Bush, oil |
Reuters is reporting that President Bush is “lodging oil price complaints” with the Saudi King. It makes him sound more like a frustrated consumer calling a hotline rather than the most powerful leader in the world.
“President Bush on Tuesday gently nudged OPEC to raise production levels, saying he hopes the oil cartel will consider how high oil prices are straining the U.S. economy. Bush said he is speaking with Saudi King Abdullah about oil prices, which recently surged past $100 a barrel. ‘Oil prices are very high, which is tough on our economy,’Bush said. ‘I would hope, as OPEC considers different production levels, that they understand that if … one of their biggest consumers’ economy suffers, it will mean less purchases, less oil and gas sold.”
Bush gently ‘nudges’ the Saudi King, now, after oil has hit $100 a barrel, isn’t it time for more than a nudge? Why doesn’t the President speak forcefully and passionately about the critical need for the price of oil to stabilize if not decline. As the US economy teeters on a possible recession, it is reasonable to conclude that a drop in oil prices and an increase in OPEC oil production would help the US economy. So why just the ‘nudge?’
