Australia Decides…President Bush Can’t Be Happy

by: Jason Haber Sunday, November 25th, 2007

In Australia, John Howard’s government came down in a thud, rejected in a landslide defeat. The incoming Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, got a congratulatory call from President George Bush. It wouldn’t be surprising if President Bush was less than thrilled with the Australian electorate. First, Rudd has called for troop withdrawals from Iraq. Rudd has also pledged to sign Australia into the Kyoto Protocol. This would make the US the only major industrialized nation not part of the international pollution-reduction agreement. As John Howard was a strong supporter of the Bush Administration, the results of this election could be a harbinger of things to come in elections around the world.
