As Diplomacy Fails In Kenya, Mass Protests and Violence Set to Return
For the past few days it seemed that cooler heads were prevailing as mediators arrived in Kenya in an attempt to find a resolution to the violence that has killed at least 500 people. Now, those attempts at mediation have failed.
The demonstrations are set to begin on Wednesday in Nairobi’s Uhuru Park, but will expand to over 20 locations on next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Police Commissioner Mohamed Hussein Ali said the protests would not be allowed, setting the stage once again for water cannons and violence between the two sides.
An African Union effort to mediate Kenya’s political crisis ended in failure earlier this week. The AU Chairman, John Kufour, left after failing to secure an agreement or even a meeting between President Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
